The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is an adventurous voyage in far-east Nepal. In taking on this magnificent journey, you will be led to the base of the 3rd tallest mountain peak in the world, Kanchenjunga (8586m). The meaning of Kanchenjunga is “five treasures of the great snow,” which refers to the five summits that make up Kanchenjunga. The trail offers many landscapes, cultures, and priceless Himalayan mountain views. The long trek (lasting almost a month!)leads deep into some of the most remote mountain landscapes in Nepal. It is in the far-east of Nepal, along the border of Sikkim and Tibet. Throughout the trail, we see a wide spectrum of scenery – from lush, tropical jungles to rhododendron, chestnut, and oak forests, and then into the alpine zone, where little vegetation can exist. You will also see a range of cultures from Rai and Limbus to Tibetan Buddhist villages. It is also important to note that the trail is mostly free from crowds, allowing the mountain to retain much of its pristine natural beauty.
The itinerary starts by trekking to Taplejung after a short, scenic flight to Suketar. We walk on the lowlands, passing terraced rice fields, charming villages, and vibrant forests, before climbing onto a ridgeline of rhododendron forests. As we gain elevation, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga (four of the world’s five tallest mountains) show themselves. Your mind will be blown at the sheer size of these peaks. We reach Yalung Glacier and cross a series of passes, and suddenly the views become more astonishing. The trail reaches Pangpema (4800m), the base camp for Kanchenjunga climbing expeditions. Soon after, we cross the Lapsang La Pass over to the south side of Kanchenjunga. Making our descent, we visit the yak pastures of Ramche and Oktang, where there are views of the southwest face of Kanchenjunga, considered as one of the most beautiful mountain massifs in the world. This view will leave a lasting impression on your memory.
Trekking is possible throughout the year, but Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) provide the best weather. During the Spring, there is a bit more color and the rhododendrons are blooming, and in the Autumn months, the skies are generally clearer.
