The Pikey region is situated 250 km to the east of Kathmandu and offers travelers many sources of pleasure, particularly the beauty of the landscape and the cheerfulness of the Sherpa people. Some trekkers prefer the high altitude of the Khumbu area while others enjoy walking in the lower area home to a large group of flora and fauna and ethnic culture in the backdrop of giant Himalaya peaks. One of the most beautiful areas, and one still largely off the tourist route, is Pikey Mountain (4070m) a very special Mountain that is considered the protector of the entire Solu region. It is a destination not to be missed if one is planning to trek in the Everest region.

Jiri, Bhandar (changma), and Golla are the major villages laying along the trail. Golla is a small Sherpa village with about 45 houses scattered over the slope of Pikey at an altitude of 3660m and dominated by a range of snow-capped mountains: Gaurishanker, Karylung, Number, and Katanga among others. The religious life of the village is very vibrant thanks to its four Monasteries, all belonging to the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism, in which the monk perform sacred dance festivals such as Duwa Chhechi, Ngungne, Dumji, and Rimdu. Each festival lasts for several days. Pikey is the perfect area for houses that have little time but wish to experience varied trek-see Everest in full scale, enjoy deep blue skies, visit a typical village and experience the mountain climate without seasonal barriers. Each season of the year has its own beauty, its own feel that makes a trip to this area worthwhile.

The major attraction of the area is its village with its traditional life, delicious Sherpa food, festive Buddhist Monastery and shrines, the dense forest of pine and juniper, varieties of rhododendron, and the colorful birds include the national bird of Nepal. The view from Pikey is incredible, stretching from Kanchenjunga in the far east to Annapurna in the west ( one can view Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Nuptse, Everest, Annapurna, Lhotse, Manaslu, Gaurishanker) and from north to south can see very easily with your open eye. Sunrise and sunset views are truly breathtaking on this trip. The sunset view from Pikey has nothing that compares with it in another part of Nepal, dipping behind the mountain that is southwest of Kathmandu.

The entire Pikey peak area is pastureland of the Sherpas of the surrounding area. They spend the period from May to October in this heaven with cattle. Complementing the rich pastureland is their major cheese factory probably the best cheese in Nepal. Two of them can be visited on our trail, to a warm welcome from their managers with a cup of tasty tea or warm milk and a piece of fresh cheese. Shikhar Adventure arranges the trek with complete management. Please, feel free to contact us for more detailed information.
