After leaving Kathmandu, you have the opportunity to explore Pokhara. This picturesque city is famous for its surrounding natural scenery and laid-back feel. It’s bigger than Kathmandu in size, but walking along the lakeside, you feel like you’re staying in a small town. After our night in Pokhara, we head to Nayapul, full of energy, to begin our trek. We trek through lively rhododendron and bomboo forests and past Gurung and mixed ethnic villages. After a night in Ghorepani, we wake up early to catch the immaculate sunrise behind the high Himalayas at Poon Hill. Stare in awe at the red and orange glimmer coming off the Annapurna range mountains. Continuing through the terraced hillsides and charming villages, we soon reach the dense sub-tropical forests where you might see monkeys swinging from branch to branch.
As you approach Machhapuchhre Base Camp, you’ll notice a significant change in scenery. From the alpine meadows, look around as see waterfalls cascading down the side of massive rock walls. Eventually a final ascent takes you to Annapurna Base Camp at 4130 meters. Enclosed by a wall of rugged mountains on all sides, you’ve reached the height of the trek.
From here, you descend to Jhinu Hot Spring, which treats your muscles with much deserved relief. From here, you descend to Nayapul and back to Pokhara. The views along throughout this trek are unbelievable. Equally fascinating, you will experience the rich culture and genuine hospitality of the Gurung ethnic group.
Trekking is possible throughout the year, but Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) provide the best weather. During the Spring, there is a bit more color and the rhododendrons are blooming, and in the Autumn months, the skies are generally clearer.
